2014 Forestry Conference Summary

Steve Bell - Setting the Scene   
 Forest Manager and joint CEO,  Forest Management NZ ltd. (FMNZ) Steve has over 23 years’ experience in forest operations and has worked for the company since 1992. Steve presentation sets the scene for our forests as they move towards harvest.  

 Paul Gestro - Asian Economies

Paul is responsible for leading and directing the Bank of New Zealand (BNZ) and its customers to networks, connections and financial services throughout Asia. Paul talks on how demand is looking in Asia.  

 Andrew Locke - Aligning Port Infrastructure

 Andrew Locke is the Senior Business Manager with the Napier Port, he is also responsible for all log operations on Port. Andrew talks about how the Eastcoast ports are preparing for our upcoming harvests.  

 David Dragovich - ISO stevedoring and log marshalling

 David has a diverse wood products background including  an excellent knowledge base of vessel loading,log marshalling design, implementation and support. This presentation outlines some of the log handling technologies their company is implementing.  

 Richard Smith and Ben Williams - Forest Engineering and Harvest Planning 

 Logic Forest Solutions Ltd provides “Pre Harvest Services”, as well as Harvest and Roading management. Richard and Ben will be talking about Forest Engineering.  

 Doug Ducker - Export and domestic log markets

 Doug Ducker, Managing Director Pan Pac Forest Products. Pan Pac operates a 42 year old forestry and wood products manufacturing company at Whirinaki near Napier, New Zealand.  The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Oji Green Resources, Tokyo, Japan and produces lumber and wood pulp for global markets including Japan, China, SE Asia, USA and Australasia.  

 James Powrie - Value Recovery

 James has worked in forest management, harvest planning, harvesting, export, logistics, sales, carbon, land restoration, farming, and manuka honey forests. James promotes the extraction of all possible value to improve the fortunes of forest owners.  

 Andy Dick - Log Optimisation

 Maximising returns from forests using value recovery techniques and optimising technology (such as Logmeister) is Andy’s speciality area.  

 Kim von Lanthen - Financial Markets Authority

Foundation as supervisor for the Roger Dickie forest partnerships is working with the Forest Manager to  implement new custodial systems so that we will be compliant with latest legislative requirements applicable to all forests.  

 Rory Bennison - Harvesting and Boundaries

Rory is a Technical Forester for Forest Management NZ LTD, Rory has been with FMNZ since 2000. His presentation provides an operational overview of the harvesting process and illustrates the issues relating to harvesting and boundaries.

Conference Speakers

 

Roger Dickie

Managing Director of Roger Dickie NZ Ltd. He is Chairman and director of 76 rural investment partnerships and companies and is the executive director and spokesman for the Kyoto Forestry Association. Since 1971 Roger Dickie has coordinated and developed 91 rural investment syndicates for New Zealand and overseas investors. These cover an area of more than 29,500 ha and are located in the North and South Island. Roger will be giving an introduction to the weekend and speaking on options surrounding you harvest moving forward.

 

Dr Russell Ballard

Dr Russell Ballard is an independent non-executive director.  He is the immediate past Chancellor of Massey University and is currently Chairman of the Plant Market Access Council (PMAC), The New Zealand Agrichemical Education Trust and the NZ School of Dance and a Director of TeamTalk.  He has been the Chairman of a CRI (Scion) and a SOE (Timberlands West Coast) and CEO of 5 Government Departments including the Ministry of Agriculture  and Fisheries and the Department of Education.  He is a fellow of the Institute of Management and an accredited member of the Institute of Directors.  Dr Ballard was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2004.

 

Steve Bell

Forest Manager and joint CEO,  Forest Management NZ ltd. (FMNZ) Steve has over 23 years’ experience in forest operations and has worked for the company since 1992.  Steve is involved with all forest operations in Gisborne, Wairoa, Napier, Wanganui and Otago.  He has been involved with the day to day management of the partnerships since the early years, and for most has seen them develop from their inception.  Steve has always placed a high emphasis on transparency and prides himself on what the FMNZ team have achieved over the years.  He looks forward to the unique challenges the future brings as the team embark on the harvesting phase.

 

Paul Gestro

Paul is responsible for leading and directing the Bank of New Zealand (BNZ) and its customers to networks, connections and financial services throughout Asia. Prior to this role Paul spent 10 years with the New Zealand Government leading trade and foreign investment based in Singapore and New York, where he was also New Zealand’s Consul General. As a specialist in international business Paul has in depth experience in issues relating to global trade, cross border investment, foreign affairs and business internationalisation. Paul has a business and agriculture degree from Massey University, a post graduate qualification in International Strategy & Leadership from the University of Auckland and completed an Executive Leadership programme at the Harvard Business School. During his professional career in finance, technology and business consulting, Paul also founded and grew a horticulture production and export company which ran for 25 years.

 

Andrew Locke

Andrew Locke is the Senior Business Manager with the Napier Port, he holds a Bachelor of Business Studies from Massey University majoring in Management and Human Resource Management.He has 23 Years Industry Experience, 5 years working for a Shipping Agency during which time he gained a detailed knowledge of vessel operations, import + export documentation and supply chain logistics and 18 Years working in the Marketing / Commercial Department at the Port of Napier, He is also responsible for all log operations on Port. 

 

David Dragovich

David has a diverse wood products background including 8 years of remanufacturing high value timber products. In 2007, joined ISO as a stevedore foreman. Throughout this time David built an excellent knowledge base of vessel loading across all products that ISO handled. In 2010 David joined the log marshalling division to assist with design, implementation and support of log marshalling technologies. Since then David has worked his way through the business demonstrating strength in the design and implementation of technology throughout various operations. David has recently been appointed the General Manager of ISO’s stevedoring division.

 

Richard Smith

Director of Logic Forest Solutions Ltd. A Gisborne based forest engineering and management company. Founded in 1999 and provides “Pre Harvest Services” ,  as well as Harvest and Roading management. Clients are based predominately throughout the Central and Lower North Island and include both corporate and private forest owners. Richard in conjunction with business partner Ben Williams will be talking about Forest Engineering.

 

Ben Williams

Production Director for Logic Forest Solutions Ltd. Ben specialises in Harvest and Road Construction Management, harvest planning and deals with compliance including Health and Safety and Environmental Management. 

 

Doug Ducker

He has also served as Chairman of the New Zealand Wood Council for 7 years, a director of Wood Processors Assn (now WPMA) for 10 years and a director of Business Hawkes Bay since inception.

 

James Powrie

James started as a labourer with the NZ Forest Service in 1984 and completed an honours degree in forestry science in 1993.  He has worked in forest management, harvest planning, harvesting, export, logistics, sales, carbon, land restoration, farming, and manuka honey forests. James promotes the extraction of all possible value to improve the fortunes of forest owners -  through his website - www.forestvaluerecovery.com.  He also hosts tours of the NZ forest industry and is a partner in an FSC certified forest in NZ.

 

Andy Dick

Maximising returns from forests using value recovery techniques and optimising technology (such as Logmeister) is Andy’s speciality area. He splits his time between Logjiztix Limited, Interpine Forestry and Toitu Te Waonui, a Maori afforestation group. He is a Registered Forestry Consultant and a past Councillor of the NZ Institute of Forestry and a past Board member of the Logging Industry Research Organisation. He is a parochial Hawkes Bay supporter living in Whangaparaoa.

 

Kim von Lanthen

 Risk Director, Foundation Corporate Trust; Foundation as supervisor for the Roger Dickie forest partnerships is working with the Forest Manager to  implement new custodial systems so that we will be compliant with latest legislative requirements applicable to all forests.  Kim is a shareholder and director of Foundation and his background is in the finance sector


   

Rory Bennison

Technical Forester for Forest Management NZ LTD, Rory has been with FMNZ since 2000, having been involved from the ground up as a field supervisor he has seen the partnerships transition from young plantings to where they are today.  Rory is responsible for the FMNZ Land information system, Inventory and anything with a technical nature.  Rory will provide an operational overview on the harvesting process and illustrate the issues relating to harvesting and boundaries.
