Steve Bell

Steve Bell: Forest Management New Zealand Ltd (FMNZ). Steve has over 20 years experience in forest operations and has worked for the company since 1992.  Steve is responsible for the day to day management covering financial planning / budgeting, land preparation, forest establishment, tending operations, inventory, human resources and public relations. He puts a high emphasis on transparency and maintaining good client communications. Steve is involved with all RDNZ forest operations in Gisborne, Wairoa, Napier, Wanganui and Otago. Steve was the opening speaker and gave the conference an update of the forest estate and how the forests stood up well during the winter storms.    

Guy Salmon

Guy Salmon: Executive director of the Ecologic Foundation. Guy has worked as an environmental policy specialist in consulting, policy advice and research roles. He contributed to the development of the Resource Management Act, and the development of policies on forestry, climate change, electricity markets, land transport and overseas aid. Guy gave an informative presentation on Climate Change and the Environmental benefits of forestry and the Emissions Trading Scheme .    

Brett Gilmore

Brett Gilmore:  Brett works for the Forestry and Logistics team at Pan Pac. Brett is the Chair/Convenor of the FSC (Forest Stewardship Certification) Cluster Group, with a membership area that has grown to about a million hectares. Brett is currently on the Standards Development Group that is negotiating a NZ FSC National Standard. He spoke about the advantages and disadvantages of joining the FSC.    

Mike Bartells

Mike Bartells: Managing Director of Forest Owner Marketing Services Ltd (FOMS), a specialist Harvesting & Marketing service provider to private forest owners. FOMS provides these services primarily in the Southern North Island, Taranaki and Hawke's Bay regions & is arguably the largest independent harvesting and marketing service provider in the region. Mike gave a very insightful presentation on harvest planning and some statistics of just what the group has ahead leading up to harvest.    

Peter Hill

Peter Hill is currently Managing Director of Pentarch Forest Products Ltd and a Director of JPP Forestry Ltd.  Pentarch specialises in the export of forest products to a number of international markets. JPP Forestry specialises in the provision of harvesting and marketing to forest owners in the Southern North Island. Peter’s previous positions have been Assistant Director of Marketing for the New Zealand Forest Service, General Manager of Wenita Forest Products Ltd and a Director of Forestry New Zealand. He joined Pentarch in 2002.  Peter is also a past President of the New Zealand Forest Owners Association. Peter gave a great insight into the log export markets and how he sees the future supply demand situation relative in particular to China and other developing Asian markets.    

Dr. Elspeth McRae

Dr. Elspeth MacRae: Group Manager Bioproduct Development at Scion. Dr MacRae is the Executive who leads the Bioproduct Development business and science area which includes Scion wood and fibre processing as well as biorefinery, biodiscovery and bioplastic activities. Dr Elspeth spoke about the advances in wood engineering and future markets and opportunities for timber products - an exciting industry with some amazing technologies and new opportunities.    

Wayne King

Wayne King: Managing Director - Carbon Market Solutions. Wayne has over 14 years international experience on climate issues, having been closely involved in the international negotiations on the Climate Convention and Kyoto Protocol, in the areas of financial mechanism, capacity building and clean development mechanism. Wayne has a background in Forestry and worked previously as a forest ranger within the New Zealand government. Wayne is focused on business development in the New Zealand carbon market and assisting landowners with monetizing carbon credits under the Permanent Forest Sinks Initiative and the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme as well as voluntary carbon markets. Wayne gave an introduction to KYOTO and the ETS as they relate to your forests.    

Mike Caulton

Mike Caulton:Mike is the Executive Director of Aon New Zealand. Aon Corporation being the worlds largest insurance broker.  Mike gave an overview of insurance as it relates to the forests.  Mike has been looking after the insurance of the Roger Dickie group forests for a number of years and gave an overview of the insurance as new policies evolve in the wake of the Christchurch earthquake as well as the carbon aspect of the forest cover.    

Nigel Brunel

Nigel Brunel: Head of Carbon and Energy at OM Financial. Nigel has considerable experience and understanding of Carbon Markets and the ETS. Nigel's extensive knowledge of the local market and understanding of domestic price controls, along with how international pricing affects the local market ensured he gave a great insight into the current carbon markets and where the market is heading.    

Peter Clark

Peter Clark: Director of PF Olsen Group Limited, Peter is a forester with over 30 years experience in plantation forest establishment, silviculture and management. Peter spoke about risk strategies available to forest owners selling carbon and joined the Sunday morning panel discussion on all aspects of Carbon as it relates to your forests and answered questions from the floor.    

Roger Dickie

Roger Dickie: Managing Director Roger Dickie NZ Ltd. He is Chairman and director of 76 rural investment partnerships and companies and is the executive director and spokesman for the Kyoto Forestry Association. Since 1971 Roger Dickie has coordinated and developed 89 rural investment syndicates for New Zealand and overseas investors. These cover an area of more than 27,500 ha and are located in the North and South Island. Roger gave a presentation on carbon as it relates to the groups forests and lead the Sunday morning panel discussion on the pros and cons of selling NZU’s.
